June 1998

4th Malaysia Open 1998

The first competition for many of us in this region, this competition boasted 150 couples participating (with around 50 of them beginners, open to Malaysia only). About 26 Singapore couples took part. It was a tough competition and serves as a great starter to the many competitions to come for the year.

Coming Competitions

Despite the economic downturn, there seems to more competitions than ever. Check out the competitions page for a calendar of events. The first Singapore competition will be the 3rd Singapore Superstar International Dancesport Championship to be held on 28 Jun 98. Shortly after that, the most highly regarded 11th Lion City Dance Sport Championships will be held on 1 Aug 98. On 24 Oct 98 will be the long established 11th Singapore International Ballroom Dancing Championships. With two new competitions in Singapore (1st Universal Dancesport Championships 1998, 19 Sep 98 and the 1st ABDA Singapore Open Championships, 2 Oct 98) adding to these established competitions in Singapore its going to be a good year for competitors. And that's not adding to the rest of the competitions around the region.

Dance Movie Review : Forever Fever

We managed to catch this locally produce movie "Forever Fever". A simple story, but one which most dancers can identify with. The hero's rendition of John Travolta's solo dance sequence in Saturday Night Fever was really quite good. If you are a dancer .. don't miss this movie with a bit of dancing, comedy and romance. more >>

ABDA Matters

At the SNOC AGM, new office bearers were elected. See Associations for details. One interesting thing was the Multimillion Dollar Awards Plan (MAP). Basically, sportspersons who win medals at the Asian Games or the Commonwealth Games can look forward to monetary incentives ranging from $25,000 to $250,000! This has great implications once Dancesport is included as an official event in the Asian Games and / or Commonwealth Games. Just imagine how such a monetary incentive (much like prize money) could drive Dancesport to greater heights.

ADBA held its first meeting in late May 98. Lots of things were discussed and the most interesting thing is that ABDA will be organsing the 1st ABDA Singapore Open Championships on 2 Oct 98. This date is planned to take advantage of the 5th IDSF Asia Pacific Dancesport Championships which will be held in KL, Malaysia on 4 Oct 98. Competitors going to KL can first drop by Singapore and then proceed to KL for 5th IDSF Asia Pacific Dancesport Championships. For Singapore couple to take part, you need to be at least registered with ABDA at a cost of $20 per couple. Better still, join ABDA as a member. All overseas competitors must be members of their respective National Dancesport Associations.

The 1st ABDA Singapore Open Dancesport Championships will be held on 2 Oct 98, 7pm-11pm at Toa Payoh Sports Hall, Singapore. Admission tickets prized at S$30.00 are available from the Championship Organiser, Community Clubs and selected Dancing Schools. There will be Standard and Latin Events from Grade D (One dance, Waltz, Quickstep for Standard; Cha cha, jive for Latin) to Grade A1 (Amateur). Grade B, C and D events are only open to Singaporeans. Overseas competitors can only take part in Grade A events. All entries must reach the Championship Organiser by 15 Aug 98.

May 1998

Right now most of the Singapore competitors are preparing for the 4th Malaysia Open 1998 Dancesport Championships which will be held on 7 Jun 98. You will probably see more Singapore competitors there rather than the next few Singapore competitions as most of the major schools are believed to be competing in Malaysia. The first Singapore competition will be the 3rd Singapore Superstar International Dancesport Championship to be held on 28 Jun 98.

On 29 May 98, we will be having a meeting with the SNOC. We will keep you informed of the outcome of the meeting.
